Bio Diversity Mapping
Seed mapping is determining the variety of indigenous seeds present within a particular area. It is carried out using the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) technique. This involves a close interaction with community members, especially its elders, to determine the existing biodiversity of the region.
Seed Multiplication
Seed multiplication is important in that it helps enrich the biodiversity of a local area by making available many indigenous seed varieties to farmers who hitherto had no access to the seeds. It is also an income generating scheme where individual farmers are compensated for their efforts in seed production.
Pure Seed Production
Indian seed production system is a robust route to mitigate the seed requirement of the country. The seed class involves Nucleus, Breeder, Foundation and Certified seed with different seed quality standard at different levels to safe-guard the productionof large quantity of quality seed for sustainable agriculture.
Seed Storage
Seed storage is the preservation of seeds under controlled environmental conditions that maintain seed viability for long periods. The longevity of seeds depends on initial seed quality, moisture content and temperature during storage. In general, low moisture content and low temperature reduce the loss of seed viability.
Crop Management
Crop management techniques have been recommended to farmers, after participatory on-farm validation of them to reap good genetic potential of crop varieties. They enable better farm economy by elevating utilization of land, water and nutrients with improved efficiency.
